Each participant will have two minutes to introduce themselves and their business, pass out materials, and take questions. At the end of each session, everyone, excluding table monitors, will move to their next table assignment and repeat the process. Member Moment
"I planned an entire wedding reception for a high profile client in Washington DC in about 15 minutes." Members of the Washington DC chapter of ISES were in attendance at EventWorld in Los Angeles, and I got recommendations for a florist, caterer and valet parking by networking at an EventWorld cocktail party. It made it so easy to do a spectacular event." -- C. Anne Coulter, CSEP

July Meeting Recap

Rolling Out the Red Carpet:
Making Your Guests Feel Like Celebrities

We all work with celebrities-all of our guests should get the red carpet treatment regardless of whether they are on TV. Celebrities want to know what any guest will ask: “What time do you need to have me at your event?” “How long?” “What do I wear?” “Are you feeding me?” “Who is going to be there?”

Being in control of your events is your greatest tool to working with high profile or high maintenance guests:

• Be a bowling ball. It’s your job to break up groups of people who already know each other. And to get the celebs free from hangers-on, especially when they need to be moving.
• Practice saying, “It’s raining outside.” This should be your tone of voice when dealing with guests and difficult situations. No emotion, no apology, just a simple statement. If we sound apologetic then the guest will feel like they can get what they want and they will be disappointed if they don’t.

Member Spotlight

Celebration Plan-It creates Classic Balloon Décor and Balloon Deliveries for all occasions and events.

Family owned and operated by Jim and Melinda Updike, Celebration Plan-it has roots that reach to many areas of the event industry. Over the years, Jim and Melinda have worked in the family amusement business (golf and games), event planning and operating, DJ and A/V services, catering, clowning, entertaining, and recently owned a party rental business.
After years of offering balloon décor as an “add on” to events, Celebration Plan-It sold its party rental inventory in December of 2005 to focus full time on providing high quality Classic Balloon Décor and Deliveries.

Jim has a Business Degree from Indiana University, and Melinda attended Oral Roberts University. Jim and Melinda have five children (14 - 23), who were instrumental in the birth of the balloon decorating business. Jim learned how to create balloon hats and animals to entertain the children, who all then learned the twisting skills better than dad! The family added balloon twisting to their line of products for events, which eventually led to the establishment of Classic Balloon Décor for Celebration Plan-It.

Although new to ISES, it is clear the benefits of being members include meeting people in the industry who are excited and energetic about providing services that help create great events, learning from others’ experiences working in Indianapolis, and being able to refer customers to people we can trust to take care of their other special event needs.
Classic Balloon Décor adds immediate impact, excitement, color and motion to any event or venue. Décor may be static, such as columns, arches, garlands and canopies; active, such as balloon drops, balloon releases, exploding walls and exploding giants; or sculptures, such as palm trees, animals, logos, or any theme.

Balloon Décor is fun and unique, and adds value, atmosphere and emotional lift to events. Celebration Plan-It has created and supplied décor for graduations, company picnics, golf outings, proms, grand openings, fairs, races, birthdays, showers, weddings, receptions and even a funeral!

Visit their website at celebrationplan-it.com to see amazing photos of awesome creations.

Board Member Spotlight

Anne-Marie Dezelan
ISES VP of Membership

Raised in Florida by missionary parents, Anne-Marie Dezelan's childhood was filled with warm meals and open doors. This lifestyle eventually influenced her career direction. Her parents, Charlie and Karen, had an uncompromised passion for entertaining and graciousness, and were always looking for a reason to bring people together. They lived their lives in celebration of today, service to others, and hope for tomorrow.

That zest for hospitality was evident in Anne-Marie from the beginning, in fact event planning is the only job she has ever pursued. After planning events as an employee for various corporations and non-profit organizations, she quickly realized that the freedom to be creative and vibrant was more important than a tidy cubical and a conservative dress code, thus Annie-O’s was born.

The name is a tribute. It is the nickname her parents gave to her as a child, before they died much too young. Each time someone calls her by that name, she is reminded of the people who encouraged her to celebrate life and live it to its fullest.

Don’t be surprised if you hear an energetic “y’all” as you get together with this southern sparkplug. Where she comes from, they prefer to end a meeting with a hug rather than a handshake, and somehow, it just seems better that way.

Anne-Marie was recently appointed to Vice President of Membership on the ISES Indiana Board of Directors. Her main goal is to recruit new members and once members have joined ISES it is crucial to her that members feel welcomed and appreciated. It is also important to her that members realize the value of their ISES membership and are made aware of all of the benefits that come with being an ISES member.

If you are interested in serving on the Community Outreach Program committee to assist Horizon House with their event, or are interested in donating good and/or services for this event, please contact Lori Fields at ldfields@iupui.edu or 278-2136.
